Why Reddit's own search can't find deleted content

Reddit's built-in search only indexes live, non-deleted content. When a post or comment gets deleted, Reddit removes it from its search index immediately. To find deleted or old content, you need to search outside Reddit — using third-party archives that captured the content while it was still public.

The main Reddit archives (and what they cover)

PullPush

The primary active Reddit archive. PullPush indexes posts and comments with structured metadata (author, subreddit, timestamp, score, text body). Searchable by username, subreddit, post ID, and date range. Covers 2021-present with strongest coverage in popular subreddits.

Pushshift (historical only)

The predecessor to PullPush. No longer ingesting new content since mid-2023. Its archive from 2016-2023 remains partially accessible and is valuable for historical research and recovering posts from the pre-PullPush era.

Wayback Machine

Full-page HTML snapshots captured at specific dates. Coverage is unpredictable and depends entirely on whether someone manually saved the URL. In exchange for spotty coverage, it provides the richest data — full page context, styling, and nested comments exactly as they appeared.

Google Cache

Short-lived page caches that occasionally preserve deleted posts for days (sometimes weeks) after deletion. Unreliable but worth checking for very recent deletions. Search for the exact URL on Google and click "Cached" if available.

How to search each archive

PullPush API search

PullPush offers a REST API at pullpush.io. You can search by:

• Author: ?author=USERNAME
• Subreddit: ?subreddit=SUBREDDIT
• Post ID: Search a specific known post by its Reddit post ID

Wayback Machine search

Go to web.archive.org, paste the Reddit URL, and browse available snapshots by date. The calendar view shows exactly when snapshots were taken. Older, more popular threads tend to have more snapshots. Reddit's homepage and major subreddits have thousands of snapshots — specific threads may have none.

Multi-archive search (recommended)

The most effective approach: use a tool that searches multiple archives at once. Different archives capture different data at different times — combining them gives the highest recovery rate.

When archives fail: common reasons

• The post was in a low-traffic or obscure subreddit that archives don't prioritize
• The content was deleted too quickly (less than a few hours after posting)
• The post contained only images or links with minimal text — harder for text-based archives to index
• You're looking for content from a date window not covered by any active archive
• The subreddit was private or restricted when the content was posted
